I am not a trained artist, sculptor or woodturner. In fact, I spent 20 years as a Washington lobbyist and college professor. In college I avoided any class that had the word "art" in the course description. So how did I get into pen making?
It was golf that got me into woodturning. Many years of playing golf took its toll on my back, limiting how much I could play or practice. My wife and son, sensing my disappointment, enrolled me in a local woodturning club. The very first class I took was pen making. I was hooked. Later, I branched out to turning bowls and goblets. As I became a more accomplished wood turner, I redirected my attention to creating exotic, one-of-a-kind pens. It has always been my belief that pens should be usable works of art, not just a writing implement.
I have been an avid pen collector for decades and appreciate the workmanship of fine pens. I have tried to apply this same love of pens to my designs. I want anyone who owns one of my pens, to proudly show it to friends as they would any treasured piece of art.
I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that my pens bring a sense of accomplishment and pleasure to its new owner. I hope that you, too, will get as much enjoyment from your pen as I get from making it.
